ISO 39001. Road traffic safety management

ISO 39001 defines the requirements for a road traffic safety management system.

This standard is applicable to any organization that interacts with the road infrastructure.

RIGCERT provides ISO 39001 certification services to demonstrate your commitment to prevent road-traffic related accidents.

Road traffic safety

Road traffic safety has become an extremely delicate issue in the last years and the estimated number of fatalities caused by road accidents around the globe stands at around 1,3 million yearly, while that of injuries is estimated to be about 20 million. There are studies showing that road traffic accidents represent the leading cause of death for people aged between 10-24 years (source: the Lancet). Without an intervention this figures are likely to rise in the next years.

A first response came in 2011 when the United Nations adopted resolution A/RES/64/255 declaring the decade 2011-2020 as the Decade of action for road safety.

ISO 39001 Standard

In 2012, ISO published ISO 39001 standard with the aim of supporting organizations in implementing the measures meant to reduce the number of road traffic accidents and their consequences.

Experts form  40 countries participated in the development of this standard, along with representatives from international organizations like The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), World Health Organization or the World Bank.

The standard includes requirements based on international experience that can be used by any organization private or public that operates, designs, uses or regulates the road infrastructure. ISO 39001 includes requirements regarding important road traffic aspects like speed, technical conditions of vehicles or drivers’ fitness.

Certification to ISO 39001

ISO 39001 can be implemented and certified independently or it can be integrated with other management system standards like ISO 9001 or OHSAS 18001 for example.

Certification represents a confirmation of the company’s demonstrated commitment to avoid road traffic accidents.
